Our Story
The risk of subjects developing pulmonary hypertension (PH) is four to six times higher in developing countries compared to developed regions of the world probably because of infectious diseases. Many infections contribute to PH, including schistosomiasis and other Helminthic diseases; viral infections, such as HIV; fungal in infections, like Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (paracoccidioidomycosis); bacterial infections, such as Bordetella pertussis; and probably tuberculosis.
Despite the large prevalence of the infectious etiologies of PH, many knowledge gaps exist in understanding how the infectious agents lead to pulmonary vascular diseases, ultimately resulting in a lack of adequate therapies and public education. To address these unmet needs, a group of scientists and physicians met in Canterbury in October 2018 to establish this consortium (iPVD). The iPVD consortium represents a systematic and coherent effort to investigate the role of infection in PH.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to nurture international collaboration and systematic efforts to investigate and promote awareness of infectious pulmonary vascular diseases. At the iPVD Consortium, we bring together physicians and basic scientists to synergistically fill gaps in knowledge while fostering the training of junior investigators in the field.
Are you interested in joining a group of scientists and physicians studying the role of infection and pulmonary vascular diseases? If so, please let me know. We are looking for scientists of all levels, from young to senior.
